AGE: 47

When did you start CrossFit?
I started at Lykos in August

A few details about yourself?
I live in Kildeer and I’m married with three kids.  I do not work outside of the home currently but I worked for several years in Public Health.  My hobbies include tennis and skiing.

What type of fitness were you doing before CrossFit?
Before CrossFit, I mainly focused on pilates reformer classes.  I also used the cardio equipment in the gym but I was very easy on myself.

What is your favorite and least favorite WOD?
Annie would be my favorite WOD so far.  My least favorite WOD – well I am not sure of the name but it involved 100 burpees.

What is your favorite and least favorite lift and/or movement? 
Favorite movement would be deadlifts.  I feel more confident every time I am able to add more weight and I have had the most success with this lift.  Least favorite movement would be, without a doubt, rope climbing.

How has your view about CrossFit changed since your first WOD at Lykos?
My first class, I was terrified of CrossFit .  The WOD seemed impossible and I really really struggled.  Over time and with lots of modifications, the fear disappeared.  Now I actually look forward to seeing what the WOD will be each day.

What is your 2014 goal?
My main goal for 2014 is to be able to run a 5K without needing to stop for breaks.  I made a little progress on my 2013 goal of loosing weight but there is always room for improvement in that area.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the box?
CrossFit has affected my life outside of the gym.  One of the things I really love about CrossFit is the positive energy in the room.  I love the feeling of community and the words of encouragement.  I find that on work out days I am just in a better mood.

What advice would you give to a newbie CrossFitter?
I would advise new CrossFitters to hang in there and to go as many days as possible – especially when you are sore.

What Coach Kaia loves about Mary…
Mary was one of our very first 9:30 clients and comes to WOD  regularly.  She was scared when she first started but is not afraid to give anything a try.  While  I would love to see her increase her intensity a bit, she is so strong, stronger than she thinks.  She has come a very long way and she should be extremely proud of herself.
